Guru.com and PeoplePerHour Review — Are They a Freelancer’s Paradise?

Are you a freelancer? Then you probably have heard about Guru.com and PeoplePerHour. These two big freelance platforms are very popular, but at the same time, they are despised by many. Here is a short review of both of them. guru

Guru.com Review

Guru.com is a platform where people post jobs of all types, including freelance writing, freelance website design, and more. Freelancers then go ahead and submit a proposal – meaning that they submit a short overview of their qualifications and the price they are willing to do the job for. The job poster eventually hires one of the freelancers who submitted a proposal. Payment is done through Guru’s payment system, and Guru takes a percent of the freelancer’s earnings.

Although this sounds like a freelancer’s paradise, the truth is that it is not. The first problem is that each freelancer tries to offer to do the job at a lower price than the previous freelancer. There are freelancers from all over the world, and a freelancer from India will be willing to do the job at a fraction of the price of a freelancer in the US.

The real problem with these companies, however, is that there are just so many problems with the payment systems. Online review companies such as SiteJabber, Ripoff Report, and the BBB are filled with horror stories of freelancers having their account frozen just when they were about to withdraw their earnings. In fact, Guru.com has a C rating at the BBB.

PeoplePerHour Review

peopleperhour reviewPeoplePerHour is the same story as Guru and other similar sites. There are just too many complaints of freelancers doing work and not being able to withdraw their earnings that I really do not recommend you waste your time there.

So, What’s the Solution? What’s the Alternative?

The solution is to go to job boards where you will be working directly with the person who hires you, and payments are not made through a third party system. These sites include Monster, Indeed and Career Builder. For freelance writers, there are a number of other sites which you can see here.

If you feel that you must work on one of these platforms, I would recommend UpWork, because they have responded to BBB complaints and paid the freelancers who filed those complaints. That’s why they have an A+ rating at the BBB. However, it still would not be a first choice.

At this moment not everyone but somebodies trying to start his/her career as a Entrepreneur. It’s a new ambition for us. Actually, Most of the freelancers are going to be company or service provider such as Interloper. But the fact it, it’s really hard to hold up the ability to be an entrepreneur. Guru or People Per Hour are best marketplace also but still now not growing for lake of trust of us.
    What do think BEN.
    Merry Christmas To All.

    Hi Ben,
Great review. Thanks for sharing, I was actually very interested in trying guru site. But after reading your review I won’t waste time I think. Instead I will try other channels.
Some universal website just are not that good for freelancers, as you clearly stated a person from India will do a job significantly cheaper then an American or an European person. So we freelancers should really do a good research before trying out different platforms.

Yes Joana, it is hard to compete with the entire world of online freelancers. Just think about it for a minute and you will appreciate the magnitude of the competition.

I have also had a bad experience with Guru not in terms of payment but the fact that so many people are offering their services for a fraction of the price.
It feels as though we are being held hostage and is not an ethical approach to finding work.
Its not easy to find work as a freelancer especially in the beginning.

Your review is well written and explains exactly why people should avoid this type of service altogether.

      Hi Ryan,

Yes, I find that it is extremely difficult to get normal rates on sites like Guru. I’m sure many people will agree with me.

I found this website to have very many truths to it. I used to use both of these websites and can attest to the points that this website is giving to it’s viewers.

If your a freelancer and are searching for sites that will increase your work experience, help you to make more money, brand yourself and for those starting out get some experience, then this site gives you some of the pitfalls with the two sites they reviewed.

      Hi Naima,

I’m glad you liked my review. Yes, I do think Guru and PeoplePerHour have many potential pitfalls. After all, all you money is being channeled through them, and they can hold it if they wish. Thank you for your kind words.
