Are you a freelancer? Then you probably have heard about Guru.com and PeoplePerHour. These two big freelance platforms are very popular, but at the same time, they are despised by many. Here is a short review of both of them.
Guru.com is a platform where people post jobs of all types, including freelance writing, freelance website design, and more. Freelancers then go ahead and submit a proposal – meaning that they submit a short overview of their qualifications and the price they are willing to do the job for. The job poster eventually hires one of the freelancers who submitted a proposal. Payment is done through Guru’s payment system, and Guru takes a percent of the freelancer’s earnings.
Although this sounds like a freelancer’s paradise, the truth is that it is not. The first problem is that each freelancer tries to offer to do the job at a lower price than the previous freelancer. There are freelancers from all over the world, and a freelancer from India will be willing to do the job at a fraction of the price of a freelancer in the US.
The real problem with these companies, however, is that there are just so many problems with the payment systems. Online review companies such as SiteJabber, Ripoff Report, and the BBB are filled with horror stories of freelancers having their account frozen just when they were about to withdraw their earnings. In fact, Guru.com has a C rating at the BBB.
PeoplePerHour is the same story as Guru and other similar sites. There are just too many complaints of freelancers doing work and not being able to withdraw their earnings that I really do not recommend you waste your time there.
So, What’s the Solution? What’s the Alternative?
The solution is to go to job boards where you will be working directly with the person who hires you, and payments are not made through a third party system. These sites include Monster, Indeed and Career Builder. For freelance writers, there are a number of other sites which you can see here.
If you feel that you must work on one of these platforms, I would recommend UpWork, because they have responded to BBB complaints and paid the freelancers who filed those complaints. That’s why they have an A+ rating at the BBB. However, it still would not be a first choice.
