What is Traffic Travis? Is it any good? Is it a scam? This overview will show you how to use Traffic Travis to monitor your website’s SEO stats.
Traffic Travis — What It Is
Traffic Travis is a free tool that helps you monitor your SEO stats and discover new ways to improve your site’s SEO rankings. It’s owned by Mark Ling, founder of Affilorama, SaleHoo, and more.
There are many great features of Traffic Travis, which are all included in the free version. I will go through each of them one by one and show you how to use them to your advantage. In the screenshot below, you will see my dashboard. As you can see, I am tracking how I am ranking for several keywords, and I am also tracking the number of links I have and where they are coming from. My domain authority and Alexa rank are also included. (I’m ranked in the top five and 10 for a lot more than six keywords! Six is only counting the keywords that I am actively tracking in Traffic Travis.)
Let’s go into each feature of Traffic Travis separately.
You can create campaigns in Traffic Travis for separate sites. For each campaign, you can enter keywords, and the tool will constantly update your current rankings for those keywords. You can also choose which search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing) to track your rankings on, and in which country (for example, you can choose United States, Google.ca, Google.co.uk, etc). In the screenshot, you can see that I am tracking my rankings for blogmutt legit and blogmutt review. You can also see that I rank #2 both in Google and Yahoo USA. Read on to see what else Traffic Travis will track.
The “My Site” Feature of Traffic Travis analyzes each URL on your site independently. You can find out what their page authority rank is, the number of backlinks they have, which keywords they are ranking for (from the list of keywords I entered into Traffic Travis), and also any page warnings on that URL. As you can see, I have no SEO warnings, but I do have page warnings.
What I really like about this tool is the page warnings. Don’t get scared by them! They are just pointers that help you optimize the SEO aspects of your page. For example, if you have images that aren’t optimized with keywords in their alt tags, or if you haven’t filled out your meta title or description, you’ll get a warning. Other warnings indicate that you have too many H1 tags (which makes the article hard to read), a meta description that’s too short, a meta title that’s too long, or other metrics. You can click on the warnings number next to each URL to find out what the problems are:
Research lets you research keywords for their popularity, PPC competition, average PPC cost-per-click and more. You connect your Google Adwords account so you can do all this research. You can also enter a keyword and find out if domains for that keyword are available. For example, if you want to find out if you can get a domain name that says bestpizzatips4u, then you enter that keyword and the tool will tell you if the com, org, net, etc domains are available.
This is my favorite part of Traffic Travis. You can enter any keyword and find out if you are ranking for that keyword, what your rank is, and which page on your website is ranking for that.
But my favorite part is the competition research feature — just enter any keyword, and the tool will tell you if it is hard, medium, or easy to rank for that keyword. This metric is based on data such as the number of competing websites and the authority of the sites already ranking for that keyword. You will also get the average page authority of the websites competing for that keyword and how many backlinks they have, among other metrics. How to make money online would be very difficult to rank for, while how to make money online without a website would be much easier:
You can use the SEO feature to find places where you can get backlinks. Just enter a keyword, and the tool will bring up related websites where you might be able to find backlinks. What you do next is pick the websites that have a high authority and ask them if they would want you to guest blog for them or something. Write a guest blog and include a link back to your site. In the image below, you can see where to get backlinks for the keyword make money online. Of course, backlinks aren’t as important these days, except if they come from high-quality sites.
It’s easy to find any backlinks that you have. You’ll find how many backlinks your website has and where they are coming from. In addition, you will get the page authority of the URLs that are linking to you and their Alexa rank.
Don’t just use it for your own site! Enter your competitors’ sites to find out where THEY are getting their backlinks from, and try to get backlinks from there too!
How to Download Traffic Travis
Traffic Travis isn’t a website; it’s a program that you download on Windows. You need Windows XP or higher to use it (but who still uses Windows 2000?). It doesn’t work on a Mac or on a Chromebook.
You can go to traffictravis.com to download it. Once you sign up, you’ll get a registration key to enter when you first use the program. It’s free to use.
The free version lets you create two campaigns, track up to 30 keywords per campaign, and research five keywords at a time. The professional version lets you create unlimited campaigns and doesn’t have these restrictions. The professional version costs $97 per year.
So, Is Traffic Travis a Scam? Can It Really Be True?
I think that for a free tool, Traffic Travis is excellent. I have other ways to do keyword research, but I like using it to do a site audit and find out about warnings on my pages. I also discovered that I have over 100 backlinks — who ever knew?! I find the competition metric for SEO very refreshing as well — instead of just getting a number of competing websites, I can actually find out if it will be easy to rank for or not.
If you just want to do keyword research and/or you just have one or two sites, then the free version will be great for you. If you want to monitor multiple sites or your rankings for over 60 keywords, then you may want to upgrade to the professional version.
