Looking to earn some money by tutoring students who are learning English as a second language? Previously, I did a review of Palfish – an ESL (English Second Language) app where anyone can sign up and earn some money helping students from China who are studying English. People have really shown interest in it – it got well over 12,000 page views since I wrote it and counting!
Today, I’ve found an alternative to Palfish, and it is a great alternative if you’re looking for something that is more stable, more long-term, pays better, and lets you work from your computer instead of your phone. It’s called VIP Kid. They’ve been featured on Forbes, Bloomberg, CNBC, The LA Times, The Wall Street Journal and others, and they let you earn money by teaching without ever leaving your home.
What Is VIP Kid?
VIP Kid is a site where you can sign up to become an ESL tutor (if you’re limited on time, just go to t.vipkid.com and fill out the short application form). Basically, you’ll be teaching students from China who are studying English. You’ll help them pronounce the words correctly, understand grammar, and give them the ability to talk with a fluent English speaker and all that. Basically, just like any ESL tutor, just you’ll do it remotely and over videochat.
How Much Does VIP Kid Pay? VIP Kid Pay Rate
VIP Kid pays at a rate of up to $22 an hour. You’ll get paid for each 30-minute session. When starting out, you’ll be assigned a rate of $14-$18 an hour ($7-9 for each half hour lesson), depending on your performance in your demo lesson. You can get a pay raise of up to $22 an hour if you stay on schedule, show up to your classes on time, and work hard. The average teacher earns over $18 an hour.
If you do a lesson that has been scheduled less than 24 hours in advance, you’ll earn a bonus $2 for the lesson. Each lesson is half an hour.
How Do You Apply? VIP Kid Requirements
To apply to VIP Kid, you’re going to need a college degree (Bachelor’s). You don’t need a teaching degree, but you do need some teaching, tutoring or mentoring experience (you need to have been teaching for around a year or have put in 500 hours of teaching). VIP Kid pays considerably more than other online ESL teaching platforms, so they want good teachers.
You’ll need to fill out an online form with information about yourself. You’ll need to schedule an online interview, or a prerecorded lesson if you can’t make it. You’ll also give a mock lesson, which will help them determine how well you can teach and whether your internet quality is good enough.
You’ll obviously need a computer, internet connection, webcam and microphone.
Pros and Cons:
Make sure to read the pros and cons!
VIP Kid pays considerably more than other platforms, where you often earn just around $10 an hour or even less. They also pay you twice a month.
In addition, you don’t have to plan your own lessons. They’ll provide the lesson materials for you; you just need to review them before each lesson.
Unlike other platforms where you need to download an app, you can teach students on VIP Kid right from your computer. There is also an app where you can manage bookings and review the teaching material.
There’s no shortage of students. According to Bloomberg, VIP Kid has over 50,000 students enrolled. Obviously there are certain hours where students in China are usually available. These are called peak hours.
The application process isn’t as easy as other platforms that pay less.
You also need a sign a six-month contract. You can’t cancel bookings if they were made 24 hours in advance (they do give you a limited number of cancellations for emergencies). They’re also looking for people who can work at least 7.5 hours a week.
In addition, you’ll also be teaching young kids. These aren’t always college students learning English. Teaching with kids and their parents can be demanding.
So, Is VIP Kid Legit or a Scam? Can It Really Be True?
VIP Kid is definitely legit. It’s a perfect opportunity if you’re looking for a flexible work at home job that will make you more than sporadic change for your coffee each morning.
Of course, it’s still a work at home job. This means that along with the flexibility and ease of working at home, you also have to deal with things like paying your own taxes, lack of real job security, and things like that.
However, if you qualify, I would definitely recommend signing up with them instead of Palfish or NiceTalk. I see a lot of teachers signing up for those, and it’s just a shame, because if you already have teaching experience, you can get paid a lot more.
Final opinion: If you have a college degree, some teaching experience, and you’ve been looking into ways to make real money from home, this is definitely something you should check out.
